What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor that is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers and forms in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Treatment can help but there is no cure for mesothelioma.
Occupations at Risk of Asbestos Exposure
At-risk occupations range from pipefitters, boiler workers, welders, bricklayers to shipyards, firefighting industries, and more. Additionally, certain military personnel may be at an increased risk for developing mesothelioma after asbestos exposure. Secondhand exposure for a spouse or child is also possible as many individuals did not know they were working with such dangerous materials and unknowingly brought home asbestos fibers on their clothes, shoes an even hair.

Asbestos at Pennsylvania Steel Mills
Steel mill workers suffer some of the highest rates of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses as they faced exposure from insulations, gaskets, boilers, brakes and protective gear. Asbestos was commonly used as insulations material at steel mills through the 1970’s.
Asbestos insulation was found throughout steel mill equipment due to its fire retardant qualities which helped prevent fires and burns. Unfortunately this means that workers were exposed on a regular basis while performing their daily duties. Even if not participating in the manufacturing of steel, a worker could have been exposed through the protective garments and materials they wore and used.

Asbestos at Pennsylvania Oil Refineries
Oil refineries convert crude oil (petroleum) into refined products such as gasoline. Asbestos is heat and chemical resistant and was therefore found in many fireproof materials since petroleum is highly flammable, which could results in explosions. Gaskets, pipes, and insulation at refineries contained asbestos materials and if disturbed or removed for repair could release asbestos dust into the air.
